Dental bridges literally ‘bridge’ the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge is made up of 2 Crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (which anchor the bridge) and a false tooth/teeth which is joined in between them? Dental bridges can be made from metal, porcelain or a combination of both. They are fixed in your mouth (they don’t come in or out) and they are cemented tightly in place and are supported by natural teeth or Implants.
There are 2 main types of Dental bridges
Conventional Dental Bridges involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing teeth, with a pontic in between. These are the most common type of dental bridges and are made of either porcelain fixed to metal or all porcelain.
Maryland Dental Bridges (also called resin bonded bridges) is a dental bridge that is bonded to the adjacent teeth instead of removing the adjacent teeth. Think of it as a tooth with one or more wings attached to it. Again the tooth is made of porcelain, and the wings are made of metal, although we can now make wings in porcelain as well.
Dental Bridges are a fantastic treatment in the right circumstance, but now days Implants provide a better alternative as they don’t rely on any tooth removal.
